LEWIS & CLARK EXPLORATORY CENTER, ALBEMARLE COUNTY Phase I Archaeological Survey Click for larger view To meet requirements of Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, Rivanna Archaeology conducted a Phase I archaeological survey of the site of this proposed museum and interpretative center. Preliminary research indicated that the site had the potential to contain both prehistoric and historic resources. Systematic Phase I shovel testing documented two concentrations of late 19th and early 20th century artifacts associated with agricultural outbuildings in addition to a small number of prehistoric lithic artifacts. The report recommended no further work was necessary due to the limited historical significance and preservation of the archaeological resources identified on the property.
